Behind the Checkerboard !

A Look behind the curtain at Rick Nielsen’s Checkerboard Avenger Custom.

We had started working with Robin (Zander, Cheap Trick’s lead singer) while the band was doing their amazing SGT. PEPPER show in Las Vegas.  Robin was using a Black Corsair as his main guitar on stage for this show.

Once we locked the band into playing our 9th Annual NAMM Party we went into high gear to put a guitar into Rick’s hands, as Robin now had a pair of sparkle silver TSHs (6 and 12 string).

Mostly known for his Gibson and Hamer Explorers, we decided our AVENGER would be the most suited to his taste.  Fortunately, we had a Black Avenger in production, so our custom shop manager, Shigeki Aoshima began burning the midnight oil to hand paint Rick’s infamous checkerboard graphic!  He finished the final clear coat just two days prior to our Saturday party!

Shigeki also hand painted ‘RICK’s GUITAR’ in Japanese on the back.  Since this neck already had pearl ‘block’ inlays, Shigeki painstakingly hand painted these to create a checkerboard pattern.

The pickups installed (which also were painted to match the checkerboard) are Seymour Duncan a Pearly Gates/’59 combo, and the nickel TOM setup is by TonePros, which is also finished in Black and White.

As you and hear, the guitar looks and sounds great!

Check out the fan filmed YouTube clip below of the band rocking out their hit ‘She’s Tight’ from our NAMM party with Mr. Nielsen wielding his new toy!
